Skidmark Racing was created in 1995 by Perry Genova and Lance Dunbar at Road Atlanta race track in Braselton, GA, USA. It began as a means to express the passion Perry and Lance shared in restoring and racing vintage BMW automobiles. Back then, these guys would drive their cars to the track, compete in an event and, subsequently, drive them back home. The engineering modifications ultimately warranted trailering to the events. This permitted even more aggressive approaches to performance and reliability not to mention aesthetics. Ultimately, the boys at Skidmark Racing would pride themselves not only in the speed of their cars, but also in the aesthetics.
In 1995Team Skidmark created a 2002, purpose built as a racecar (the 201 car) for BMWCCA driving schools and club racing events. The car was originally conceived as an aesthetically intriguing, well-prepared vehicle with a great deal of attention paid to reliability and functionality. - a BMW built for racing with a wink towards the street rod level of preparation. A main roll hoop, lower springs, Bilstein shocks, Delrin bushings and larger sway bars were the main improvements. The motor employed a 300 degree cam, Stahl header and dual Weber 45’s to produce about 140 BHP.

The second purpose built car by Skidmark began in 1999 after a long vintage race weekend at Mid-Ohio where 2 engines and a header were broken! Given the long off-season, it seemed possible to complete this car before the first event in April 2000. The decision was taken to leverage best practices and componentry to create a new Skidmark car. This car would carry the number 202. Of course it HAD to be pretty but functional as well. The passenger floor was raised to allow the fitment of a big header and large muffler. A much improved safety cage was designed to enhance safety and structural integrity and installed. BMW factory turbo flares were added to accommodate a wider track and the use of 20” x 9.5” cantilevered racing slicks. The location of the fuel cell, fire system, accusump and battery were carefully considered to improve corner weighting. This car was to be full race and so a unique dashboard was designed and fabricated. As the 202 car was taking shape, the original 201 car was updated to same level of preparation. These cars have been very widely praised for their aesthetics, attention to detail, speed and reliability. Following these, three additional cars were fabricated for customers.

Ultimately, this team had a burning desire to build a new Skidmark car which would incorporate the latest standard of best practices. This project began in 2006 with a 1970 rust free shell. It was stripped to bare metal, the floor raised to accommodate a large muffler and a cage and custom dash installed. Carbon fiber hood and deck lid were fabricated to appear exactly as the OEM pieces and save considerable weight. These pieces utilize the OEM hinges and latches. The chassis was finished in the Red/Gold color scheme of the US Marine Corps. The interior, exterior, underside, engine bay and boot were all finished to a very high quality. The suspension, a relatively straightforward affair, consists of a coil over setup in the front with Bilstein dampers and adjustable camber. The rear suspension is adjustable for camber and toe and incorporates custom aluminum coil over dampers from Bilstein. Both front and rear brakes are disc with the front utilizing a BMW vented rotor and Willwood racing aluminum calipers while the rear enjoys vented rotors and Corvette aluminum calipers. These are acted upon by a beautiful, lightweight adjustable Tilton pedal setup with 3 master cylinders.

Skidmark Racing made a name for itself by building powerful, reliable racing engines in addition to aesthetically pleasing racing cars. This car received a special engine which leveraged an E30 M3, S14 crankshaft, forged Wiseco pistons and forged Crower connecting rods to achieve a displacement of 2.2 liters. Details on the bottom end include a solid cam chain tensioner and custom Skidmark aluminum underdrive pulley set (crank shaft and alternator) and a massive aluminum ‘hammer head shark’ oil pan. Up top, a Schrick 316 camshaft was employed along with the unbreakable Skidmark Racing billet aluminum rocker arms. Dual 45 Weber side drafts feed the engine while a Stahl raised floor race header provides a route for the exhaust to exit. It is lit by an Electromotove crank fired ignition system and cooled via a large aluminum racing radiator by Ron Davis Racing. This package produces approximately 230 hp which is fed through a 5-speed overdrive transmission and 4.44 rear gears providing very impressive acceleration.

The attention to detail in this vehicle is very impressive!
